Whitstable is situated at the South side of the Thames estuary. During low tide with easterly or westerly winds the water can be perfectly flat due to a sandbar "The Street" which goes out into the sea in a 90 degree angle from the beach. Otherwise the water is quite choppy. The sea bottom is rocky in a lot of areas so boots are recommended.

The beach consists of pebbles. The best area to launch is either behind the harbor or at the end of Tankerton Bay which is a further 800m to the East. Only these two places have enough space as there are very close set groynes elsewhere. Low tide is definitely the best time to launch as the beach increases significantly.
