North side of the island is open sea (North Sea). Nice big waves with high tide. Nice shallow mini-lakes with low tide. Further northeast around the corner wave breakers every 400m. Further southwest wave breakers every 150m.

Nice consistent winds. Can be any strength. Best winds from fall to spring. The island curves to the northeast, here E and W will be sideshore.

From Leeuwarden get to Harlingen and take a boat to Vlieland. Here drive to the north end of the island.

There are two beaches where a lot of swimmers are. In summer, kitesurfing is not allowed here.
