Type: | Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small Wave (< 1m) |
Hazards: | Mole |
Quality: | Crystal Clear |
Best Tide: | Tide Independent |
The water is not very deep, 10 meters deep 4 kilometers out to sea. You can walk out about 100 meters till water gets to your neck. Very little shore break, no waves, wind chop can get heavy. The chop will come from the northeast, when the trade winds are blowing from that same direction (most prevalent wind). When there is a high pressure system from the north (`Norte winds`), the waves can get a bit bigger, but not very big at all. At this time they come from the North, or northwest. When the wind is side offshore (southeast winds, frequent in the mornings), the water is flat. The water can be a bit brown in `Norte` season because the high winds and chop, churn up the sand from the ocean floor. This is mostly from November to early March. The rest of the year the water is a nice light blueish green color. Sometimes there can be a little bit of `Sargasso` sea weed, but just by the shore. Very long mole into the ocean.

Hazards: | Other |
Beach Users: | None |
The beach does not have the best launch, the coast is crowded with houses almost at the water's edge, and little jetties made of sticks and stones have been built along the coast, making it a very good idea to have someone walk into the water to launch your kite, this is easy to do because the water is shallow. There is a very wide open sandy beach, with no jetties just by the Cargo Pier, on the West side. The beach is sandy, with a little bit of shells at places, not very big though.
Best Months: | February, March, April, May, June |
Wind Type: | Trade Winds |
Best Direction: | NE |
Main Direction: | N, NNE, NE, SE, SW |
The wind is good almost all year round, except for July and August, which is the lowest wind season, and sometimes when there is Red Tide. The rest of the year, this is a very reliable spot. The most reliable months for wind are from February to June. The coast faces North perfectly, if you are facing the ocean, it stretch´s left towards the west and east towards the right. Wind is quite strong and constant if coming from Northeast, the prevalent, trade wind direction. Wind varies from 12-35 knots from this direction. Wind can also be southwest in the mornings which is side off, this is normally before the northeast kicks in around 12-2 p.m. When pressure systems come from the north, the wind can come from Northwest to North, to NNE. This wind is quite onshore, and usually VERY strong, and often gusty. At times, the Northeaster will not kick in and the wind will stay from the Southeast, and stay offshore, this winds is usually very warm and gusty, because it comes from the land. Kitesurfing is possible, with a rescue boat, but not recommended. During May and June 2002, there was not one day with less than 20 knots!

From Merida, take the road north towards `Puerto Progreso`, 32 km later you are there, look around for a nice spot, and launch.
None, just be careful with the rock jetties, respect the space of the windsurfers, they were here first. There is a lot of room for everybody to kitesurf! Be very careful with straight north winds, they are onshore, and can be gusty. Be respectful of beach users, and launch far away from them.
