Shallow and flat water protected by North Padre Island. At low tide it gets pretty shallow. The channel is deep, but do not kite here, only use it for going out or coming in. The bottom is muddy, and can have sharp shells.

Winds are very consistent. Two principal wind patterns dominate the Texas Coastal Zone: frequent, strong southeasterly winds (essentially at any time of the year but most pronounced in the spring through mid-summer) and north, northeasterly winds associated with cold fronts from October through March. July through October has a bit less wind but is still good.

Get directions from


Take the route 22 east from Corpus Christi. Drive over the JFK Causeway bridge and look out for the "Subway" sandwich shop. Then turn left into the Packery Channel County Park and follow the road until it dead ends at a grassy park.

Restricted Zones


Please avoid riding in the channel, specially during summer. Many boats pass by. Ride in the flats behind the channel.
