This water is only choppy in high winds as the fetch is about 8 miles to the east, usually very flat is it's protected on 3 sides. No real waves, just chop. Tides range up to 30 feet - Anders's beach is ridable starting with +12 tides up to the +22. Tide goes out a mile or more. The water can be shallow at times, or deep. A few reefs ENE about a half mile, otherwise just a few small rocks and lots of flat soft sand/mud bottom for miles.

Gustafson Spit is the best access point into East Kachemak Bay - coarse sand spit with steep sides coming up from a flat bottom. Ample room for launching, especially with help as it's a collector spot and usually has dried kelp on it.

Dominant ENE winds through the winter when it's probably iced anyway, WSW day breeze in the summer. Systems usually blow SE/SW. Every wind coming off the water is clean, except the offshore NW and N wind. Since it's a sheltered spit almost every direction is ridable.

South from Anchorage 200 miles, left on Kachemak Drive, go a half mile and go right on the unmarked dirt road across from the airport. Park at the bottom of the bluff and launch from Gustafson Spit on your right.
