Grindstone Lake is a large spring feed lake. It's really deep and usually stays pretty chilly into the early part of summer. Decent wind and not very crowded.

Not any beaches. Getting onto the lake is a difficult and you'll have to do some swimming and launch from the water unless you know someone who lives on the lake.

Get directions from


From I-35 coming from the twin cities, take the Sandstone exit and turn left. Continue down that road until you pass a horse area. There you take the first right. At the next stop sign, take a left and follow it to the lake.
