It's mainly a dyke full of stones. Launching and landing is a bit tricky, but if you know how (the locals will show you) it's no problem. Never try to launch a kite on the dyke, though.
Best Months: | April, May, September, October |
Wind Type: | Thermal Winds, Frontal Winds |
Best Direction: | E, S |
Main Direction: | SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW |
Since there's a well protected shallow area, it's possible to kite in slightly offshore winds. Orth has a small harbor for fishers and boats going and coming quite frequently, and most of the fishers already know how to rescue a kitesurfer (but mostly they will tow you into the shallow area, tangling your lines). Best directions is East and South, SW and SE are acceptable, North is dead offshore and West very gusty. In summer, you might find island related thermal effects that kick in around 4pm and get you going on a 20m. Since the shore has a 90° angle more wind directions work.
Transport: | Car |
Access: | Short Walk |
Fehmarn is to be found at the northern end of the Autobahn 1 (A1). You just pass the bridge and take the first exit, turning left. Now, just follow the main road for about 12km and it will directly lead you to Orth. About 100m after the village entrance park your car at the road and see the spot to the left.
Following rules apply: do not remove any stones from the dyke. Never launch a kite while standing on the dyke, always go into the water. Avoid onshore winds since the dyke and its stones can be very dangerous. Use your common sense.
